?Frequently asked questions about hay for pets

Which animals is this hay suitable for?

This hay is suitable for all hay-eating small animals – rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other small herbivores whose main food is hay.

How much hay should my pet eat every day?

Hay should make up about 80–90% of your small pet’s daily diet. Fresh hay should be available at all times in a rack or bowl so the animal can graze throughout the day.

How should I store the hay so it stays fresh?

Store hay in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. Do not seal an opened bag completely airtight – let the hay breathe to avoid moisture and mould.

How often should I replace the hay in the rack?

Replace the hay at least once a day or any time it becomes damp, dirty or very dusty. It is better to offer smaller fresh portions more frequently than to leave one large pile standing for many days.

Can hay replace pellets and treats completely?

Hay should be the main food for small herbivores, while pellets and treats are only supplements. A healthy pet usually needs unlimited access to good hay, fresh water and just a small daily portion of quality pellets.

How can I tell that the hay is good quality?

Good hay has a green to golden colour, smells fresh and pleasant and is not overly dusty. Avoid bales that smell musty, have visible mould spots or contain a lot of debris and dirt.

Is this hay suitable for both young and older animals?

Yes, hay is important for hay-eating pets of all ages. For youngsters it supports growth and tooth wear, and for older animals it keeps digestion moving – you can then adjust pellets and other foods according to age and condition.

Can hay cause allergies in people?

As with any natural plant product, some people may be sensitive to hay. If someone in the household has allergies or asthma, clean the enclosure in a well-ventilated room and consider using a mask when handling large amounts of hay.
