How to store hay correctly so it stays fresh?

Hay quality depends not only on what you buy, but also on how you store it at home. Even premium hay can lose aroma and freshness quickly if storage conditions are wrong.

1. Keep hay in a dry, ventilated area

Choose a dry and shaded place with airflow. Avoid damp storage rooms, unstable temperatures, and corners where humidity builds up.

2. Do not seal hay in airtight plastic

Hay needs to breathe. Fully sealed plastic traps moisture and increases mold risk. Paper bags, breathable fabric sacks, or open bins work better.

3. Keep it away from direct sunlight

Direct sun dries hay too aggressively and reduces aroma over time. A cool, shaded shelf usually preserves quality longer.

4. Portion daily use separately

Store your main stock untouched and move a smaller daily amount into a separate container. This reduces repeated handling of the whole batch.

5. Check smell and texture regularly

  • Fresh hay should smell natural, not musty.
  • It should feel dry and loose, not damp or clumped.
  • If you see mold or unusual dust, do not feed it.
